'Heartstopper' dog Echo, who played Nellie, dies leaving fans devastated

Echo, the border collie who played Nellie in Netflix’s Heartstopper, has died following a sudden diagnosis of brain cancer, with owner Leonie confirming the news in an emotional Instagram post.

Leonie revealed that Echo was euthanised on May 18 after his condition deteriorated rapidly. She said the first signs appeared during a routine walk when he seemed unsteady, with vets initially suspecting a vestibular issue. His health quickly worsened, leading to paralysis on one side, and scans later confirmed brain cancer. She added that Echo had shown no prior symptoms and had been active with the family just a day earlier.

“I’m so so sorry to hear this 😢,” Oseman wrote. “Echo was very special to so many and we will always remember him and all the joy he brought to us! ❤️❤️❤️”

Throughout Heartstopper’s run, which premiered on Netflix on April 22, 2022, Nellie became a fan-favourite character, serving as a constant source of comfort for Nick Nelson, played by Kit Connor. The border collie’s presence brought warmth and emotional support as the story followed the evolving relationship of the central couple.

Working with Echo was not without its challenges. Kit Connor previously described the dog as “a real pain” at times, joking that he could be a “diva,” though he also praised Echo as a “beautiful, beautiful dog.” Despite occasional difficulties, Connor highlighted the strong bond between Nick and Nellie, noting the dog’s comforting presence in key scenes.

Echo originally joined the production as an understudy after the first-choice dog fell ill, with owner Leonie previously praising his patience on set, including remaining still for long takes without discomfort.

Echo’s passing marks a deeply emotional moment for the Heartstopper community, as fans continue to share memories of the border collie who brought so much joy both on and off the screen.
