Inflation drives livestock costs beyond reach

Record-breaking inflation has continued to tighten its grip across virtually every sector, with soaring prices now affecting even the most basic necessities associated with Eidul Azha preparations.

In the open market, the cost of fodder for sacrificial animals, decorative accessories for livestock and even the sharpening of knives used for meat cutting has spiralled beyond the reach of many citizens. Temporary roadside stalls offering these items have mushroomed across various localities, yet prices continue to rise sharply.

According to market surveys, chopped green fodder is currently being sold at Rs80 per kilogram, while oil-cake feed is priced at Rs200 per kilogram. Straw has reached Rs150 per kilogram, bran is being sold at Rs170 per kilogram, and fresh green forage is reportedly fetching as much as Rs200 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, specially mixed premium green fodder - considered highly desirable feed for sacrificial animals - is being sold at Rs250 per kilogram or approximately Rs500 per bundle.

Prices of decorative items for sacrificial animals have also witnessed a steep increase of nearly 60 per cent compared to last year. Decorative anklet bells for animals are being sold at around Rs400 per set, while higher-quality varieties are priced at approximately Rs550. Animal neck bells are now retailing at nearly Rs200 each.
