Cops killed as trailer rams into police mobile

Driver arrested; claims he fell asleep at wheel

KARACHI:

A speeding 22-wheeler trailer rammed into a stationary police mobile on the Superhighway in the Gadap City area early Monday morning, killing a sub-inspector on the spot and later claiming the life of a constable who was critically injured in the crash.

The incident took place at around 5:40am when a police mobile (SPC-536) was stationed on duty on the Karachi-Hyderabad section of the Superhighway. Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan, along with constables Wajid and Parwarish, was on duty in the vehicle.

The 22-wheeler trailer (TMJ-944) hit the stationary police mobile at high speed. Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan died on the spot, while Constable Wajid became trapped inside the wreckage and was critically injured. Until the rescue teams reached, he succumbed to his injuries.

It took over an hour for Rescue 1122, Edhi volunteers, crane and lifter to reach the scene to remove the heavily damaged police vehicle, which had been pinned under the trailer. After the vehicle was pulled out, rescuers cut through the wreckage to recover the trapped police officials.

The body of Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while the body of the deceased constable was taken to a private hospital near Gadap Town. Police confirmed that the trailer driver, identified as Shahab-ud-Din son of Yasin Khan, was arrested. In his initial statement, he told police that he fell asleep while driving, which led to the fatal crash.
