'Pinky' case deepens as physical remand secured

Police claim a Pandora's box of organised crime is beginning to open

KARACHI:

The case of alleged drug queenpin Anmol, alias Pinky, took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when police succeeded in overturning a judicial magistrate's order and securing her three-day physical remand, escalating what authorities now describe as a fast-unfolding narcotics investigation with far-reaching links.

What began as a routine judicial custody decision quickly transformed into a legal tug-of-war, as South police approached the district judiciary, arguing that custodial interrogation of the accused was crucial to unraveling a broader drug trafficking network. Accepting the plea, the district and sessions judge set aside the magistrate's order and handed the accused over to Garden Investigation Police for three days of physical remand.

In a detailed review petition, the investigating officer maintained that Pinky is allegedly the central figure of an organised narcotics syndicate operating with a structured supply chain. The police further contended that interrogation is necessary to identify accomplices, trace illegal weapons, and probe a murder case reportedly linked to the same network.

Meanwhile, police have widened the scope of the investigation to trace members of Pinky's alleged cocaine distribution network. An information report has also been submitted before the district and sessions judge for District South regarding the arrest of suspects from Punjab.

A special team comprising two police officers and two personnel has been constituted to carry out operations in various cities of Punjab aimed at apprehending other members of the gang.

Investigators have initiated preliminary interrogation of the accused at Landhi Jail. The SSP Investigation, accompanied by his team and the newly appointed investigation officer Sajida Rafiq, visited the jail to oversee the process.
