Faran Tahir reflects on returning to Pakistan, gaps in local entertainment industry

Faran Tahir, best known for his roles in Iron Man and Star Trek, recently spoke candidly during a podcast about his return to Pakistan, the shortcomings of the local entertainment industry, and his hopes of creating more meaningful storytelling rooted in literature and cultural identity.

The actor revealed that his decision to return to Pakistan was largely driven by personal responsibilities, particularly caring for his ageing parents. He explained that conditions such as dementia require physical presence and emotional support, making it important for him to spend time with family.

Despite his long career in Hollywood, Tahir said he approached Pakistan’s entertainment industry as a newcomer. He spent nearly a year observing how the industry operates before actively taking on local projects, explaining that he wanted to understand its working culture and dynamics rather than assume his international experience would automatically translate locally.

Speaking about his craft, Tahir said he does not view characters as entirely heroic or villainous. Instead, he approaches every role through emotional and psychological complexity, avoiding performances that feel predictable or one-dimensional.

Looking ahead, the actor discussed his upcoming project, Inspector Jamshed, and emphasised his desire to reconnect younger audiences with Urdu literature and classical Pakistani storytelling traditions. He also confirmed plans to move into production and revealed that he is currently developing two film scripts.

Tahir comes from a family deeply rooted in Pakistan’s cultural and artistic landscape. His grandfather, Imtiaz Ali Taj, was one of the country’s most celebrated playwrights and authors.

His father, Naeem Tahir, is a respected veteran of the entertainment industry, while his late mother, Yasmeen Tahir, was also associated with the arts. His brother, Ali Tahir, remains one of Pakistan’s most recognised actors.
