Elderly cyclist dies after fall from bridge

SHAKARGARH:

An elderly cyclist died after falling from an unprotected bridge in Shahpur Bhangu area near Shakargarh, triggering concerns among residents over the lack of safety measures on roads and bridges in the locality.

The elderly man was travelling on a bicycle along Chhamal Road when he lost balance while crossing the Shahpur Bhangu bridge.

Locals said the bridge lacked proper safety railings and protective walls, causing the man to fall nearly 12 to 13 feet below along with his bicycle.

The victim sustained serious head and body injuries in the incident.

Area residents rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation on a self-help basis before shifting him to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Shakargarh for first aid.

Hospital sources said the injured man was later referred to Lahore due to his critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
