RIO DE JANEIRO:

Colombian pop icon Shakira delivered one of the largest live performances of her career, drawing an estimated two million fans to Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach for a free concert that underscored her enduring global appeal and deep connection with Latin audiences.

Held under a bright full moon, the concert transformed the iconic shoreline into a vast open-air arena, continuing a recent tradition of record-breaking performances at the venue. The event followed similar appearances by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, both of whom also attracted massive crowds to the sprawling sands.

Taking the stage shortly after 11pm, more than an hour behind schedule, Shakira appeared dressed in Brazil's national colours, immediately igniting the energy of the crowd. Overhead, drones lit up the night sky, forming the image of a she-wolf - a visual nod to her long-standing nickname and artistic persona.

Addressing the audience in Portuguese, the singer struck a personal and emotional tone. "Brazil, I love you! It's magical to think that here we are, millions of souls together, ready to sing, dance, be moved and remind the world what really matters," she said, drawing cheers from the densely packed audience stretching across the beachfront.

City officials confirmed the scale of the turnout, with Rio mayor Eduardo Cavaliere declaring the moment historic. "Two million people. The she-wolf made history in Rio," he wrote, citing official tourism figures that placed the concert among the largest ever held in the city.

The performance formed part of Shakira's ongoing 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' world tour, named after her 2024 album. The show featured a carefully curated selection of her most recognisable hits, including 'Hips Don't Lie', 'La Bicicleta', 'La Tortura' and 'Estoy Aqui', performed on a sprawling stage set up near the Copacabana Palace hotel.

The production itself was expansive and tightly choreographed, with the singer undergoing 10 costume changes throughout the night. The concert also highlighted local musical influences, with Shakira performing Brazilian-style funk alongside pop star Anitta, while legendary artists Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania joined as special guests.

Fans travelled from across Brazil to witness the spectacle, with many arriving early and some even camping overnight to secure a vantage point. The atmosphere reflected both celebration and admiration, as attendees described the singer's influence on their lives and careers.

"I'm very inspired by her, she's a Latin woman at the top," one fan told AFP, while another said, "She loves Brazil so much and the love she has for us is the love we have for her." The mutual affection between artist and audience was evident throughout the night, reinforcing Shakira's strong following in the country.

Beyond the music, the concert also carried significant logistical and economic weight. Authorities deployed approximately 8,000 security personnel to manage the massive gathering, supported by drones, facial recognition cameras and multiple screening checkpoints equipped with metal detectors.

The heightened security measures came in the context of previous large-scale events, including last year's Lady Gaga concert, after which police reported foiling a potential bomb plot. Officials maintained a visible presence throughout Shakira's performance, ensuring the safety of attendees in the densely populated area.

City authorities also pointed to the concert's economic impact, estimating it would inject more than $160 million into Rio's local economy. Tourism indicators reflected a surge in activity, with national data showing airline bookings rising sharply compared to the same period last year.

Across Copacabana, vendors capitalised on the influx of visitors, selling food, drinks, merchandise and themed souvenirs tied to the singer's current tour. The city itself had been preparing for days, with promotional material and anticipation building ahead of the event.

For Shakira, the concert marked another milestone in a career spanning decades, during which she has sold more than 90 million records and earned multiple international awards, including Grammys and Latin Grammys. Her ability to command such a vast audience in a free public setting further underscores her cultural reach and continued relevance.

As the night drew to a close, the spectacle left behind not just a record-setting crowd, but a reaffirmation of the power of live music to unite audiences on a massive scale - a tradition Copacabana beach has increasingly come to embody.
