The trial of surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile was carried out from a range in the state of Orissa and hit its target in the Bay of Bengal, test range director SP Dash said.
"The test was successful and met all the mission objectives," Dash told AFP.
The Prithvi, which is domestically built and developed, can carry nuclear or conventional payloads and has already been inducted into the armed services.
India's Defence Research Development Organisation is developing a series of missiles as part of the country's deterrent strategy against neighbouring Pakistan and China, which also have nuclear weapons.
With a striking range of 350 kilometres, the missile is capable of carrying a 1,000-kilo warhead.
Prithvi is the first missile to be developed under India's ambitious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and has been tested several times over the years.
A medium-range nuclear-capable Shourya missile was tested on a ground target at the same site on Saturday.

@One God for every one: do you understand how many zeros are in 90 million?one can onlugh at you.india has high literacy rate( ?) but its citizen cant differenciate between 90 thosand and 90 million.shame
@Dilli frend: Bro talking about mature media does not suit Indians. We all remember the 'kala pathar' story during the World Cup Semi final.
@dilli frend
No my friend, "Pakistani media is not state controlled". And if my experience with ET and DAWN.is anything to go by, they are probably more mature than most of their Indian counterparts.
@Observer
"Also, a suicide bomber is a lot cheaper than missiles. All you need is some brainwashing, a cheap bomb belt and some dates, dried fruits and drinks for the final trip."
Ha...ha...haa.....You rock. I almost fell off my chair..
@Ha: grow up he means to say 1971. but fact he is telling is right.
To those who are living ill-informed -> India tested 3 missiles successfully over the weekend: Prithvi-II: range 350 km Shourya: Hypersonic missile @ mach5: 700 km range
& LAstly, Agni-II : 2500KM range- it saw two failures in last year which were highly publisized in pakistani media, but here, i find no mention of successful test. I will have to say pakistani media is tighly state-controlled & highly immature.
@ Zaid Hamid ...
If ur really one what ur name is ... Have u ever checked ur own history ??? Or u the authour of the History text book of pakistani curricullam .... hehehehe... It says Indians sought independance from Pakistan wala history book .... hehehe
@One God for every one: in 1871, Pakistan wasn't exist. please check your history. :)
@Zaid Hamid: By your logic more than 9 million Paki soldiers surrendered to Indian Army In 1871 Bangladesh War.
India is a global power and pak has to understand that it cant compete with India. India's defence preparedness is the result of our sound economy where we can afford $40 billion of defence budget annually. India has a claim for the asian leadership and most of our focus is on China. India,US and japan will decide the future of asia.
@Cityboy: LOL! Also, a suicide bomber is a lot cheaper than missiles. All you need is some brainwashing, a cheap bomb belt and some dates, dried fruits and drinks for the final trip.
Instead we should focus on ending up the countrywide corruption
agni-2 prime(new version of agni-2) will be tested by weekend. it will third test with in a week.
come...on these missiles are being tested not for the precision strike of these missiles , such missiles are regularly utilized as an interceptor missile to check the accuracy of the anti missile defense system which is researched and developed in india as a deterrent against pakistan and china. So this is a defensive system not an aggressive system. And for all my pakistani brothers you must have noticed that for the past one year and for many more years to come you would see only prithvi's flying which just have above a couple of hundred kilometers of range , because the anti ballistic missile shield is just for 300 kilometers of range. So just chill as this is a defensive system.
@anil: You are right
it is both a good and a shameful news for us.Shameful because the orissa state which boasts india's 50% coal and world's 2nd largest aluminium reserve,battles with intense flood.Orissa boasts 13 big rivers and in stead of utilizing it, we are spending that money in missiles.Missile testing is ok,but along with that, developement is also necessary.
And........soon a volley from our beloved cousin. The show must go on.
No missile can match accuracy and precision of suicide bombers..
