PAA steps up airport uplift drive

ISLAMABAD:

The aviation authority has accelerated efforts to develop and modernise aviation infrastructure, with major projects underway in Faisalabad, Skardu and Lahore aimed at boosting tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.

The groundwork for a new aviation hub in Central Punjab formally began with the kick-off meeting for the feasibility study and master planning of the Faisalabad Greenfield Airport.

The meeting marked the start of collaboration between the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) and international consultancy firm DAR Al-Handasah, working in joint venture with local partners OCL-Asian.

The greenfield airport is envisioned as a modern, world-class facility that will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, trade expansion, tourism promotion, and job creation across Central Punjab.

A new master plan for upgrading Skardu International Airport also marks a significant step toward transforming G-B into a key hub for tourism and economic activity.

According to an official of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, the project seeks to equip the airport with state-of-the-art facilities to meet modern aviation standards and handle increasing passenger volumes.

Meanwhile, in Lahore, construction of a new passenger terminal at Allama Iqbal International Airport has entered its final stages. Project Director Tauqeer Iqbal said the Rs26 billion facility is expected to be completed within the current year.

The terminal will double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from five million to 10 million and introduce a range of modern features aimed at improving efficiency and passenger experience.

These include the addition of 144 arrival and departure counters, expansion of commercial areas for local and international brands, installation of advanced boarding systems and self-service machines.
