Russell Brand has commented on Katy Perry’s reported relationship with Justin Trudeau, saying she could “come to her senses” while also reflecting on the breakdown of their marriage.
Brand made the remarks during an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show on April 22.
The comedian criticised the former Canadian Prime Minister, referring to him as “Fidel Castro’s spawn” and questioning aspects of his political conduct, including an incident where he claimed Trudeau “invited an actual Nazi in the Canadian Parliament.”
His comments contrasted with his view of Perry’s former partner Orlando Bloom, whom he described as “brilliant.”
Brand and Perry were married in October 2010 but separated just over a year later, with divorce proceedings initiated in December 2011.
Reflecting on the relationship, Brand accepted responsibility for its failure, stating, “It was my fault. I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn’t enough and that if I was married to her, I’d somehow be a better person and more important.”
He explained that these expectations placed strain on the relationship, noting that Perry was “just a normal person” despite her global success.
Brand also said he experienced feelings of isolation during the marriage as her career accelerated, adding that he felt “lonely” at the time.
Despite his criticism of her current partner, Brand spoke positively about Perry, describing her as “really lovely” and “a very beautiful person” who is “incredibly driven and worked really, really hard.”
