KARACHI:

Students of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Sunday against the alleged killing of a third-year medical student, Dr Faheema Laghari, at Muhammad Medical College in Mirpurkhas.

The demonstration was led by student leader Kashif Wdho, with participants strongly condemning what they de-scribed as harassment followed by the student's alleged suicide a few days ago.

The protesters said that Faheema, a position-holder at the college, had allegedly been subjected to continuous har-assment by faculty members.

They termed the incident a grave failure of the institutional and governance system, stating that such treatment of a medical student within an educational institution was unacceptable.

They further expressed concern over the safety of female students, saying that even educational institutions were no longer secure spaces for women.

The demonstrators demanded that the Sindh government and concerned authorities conduct a transparent inquiry into the incident and initiate strict legal action against those found responsible.
