LAHORE:

The Punjab Auqaf Department has initiated an inquiry into alleged irregularities at Data Darbar, issuing show-cause notices to several former and incumbent officials.

According to sources, the inquiry was launched following a report received on March 9, highlighting discrepancies in the shrine's income, donation box collections and administrative management.

Officials named in the inquiry include former administrator Sheikh Jameel Ahmed, former caretakers Muhammad Sharif and Noor Hussain, Tahir Maqsood and Saqib Naseem.

The report points to fluctuations in the shrine's income over different periods, ranging from a decrease of 32.95 per cent to an increase of 72.23%. The amount collected from donation boxes was recorded at around Rs4.48 million during one period, which rose to Rs7.56 million.

The report indicated that on certain occasions, discrepancies of up to 50% were suspected during counting of donated cash, with differences noted between recorded figures and actual receipts.

It also highlights instances where some officials allegedly exceeded their authority by involving unauthorised individuals in official matters and making administrative and financial decisions in violation of established rules, thereby affecting institutional discipline.

Under orders issued by AuqafChief Administrator Dr Ehsan Bhutta, all nominated officials have been directed to submit written replies within seven days, while the inquiry officer has been tasked with completing and submitting the report within 60 days.
