Govt mulls special package to boost mango exports

Punjab Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahu has said that a special package for mango value addition is under consideration to enhance exports and improve profitability in the sector.
He was chairing a consultative session in Multan attended by mango growers, exporters, representatives of the value addition industry and other stakeholders.
The secretary said mango is the identity of South Punjab and enjoys a prominent position in international markets due to its unique taste and quality. He added that the government is taking targeted measures to uplift the sector.
Sahu said efforts are under way to increase profitability through improved production, value addition and exports, adding that stakeholders' input is being incorporated into policymaking.
He stressed that only high-quality mangoes meeting international standards can compete in premium global markets. He further said practical proposals on mango value addition would be forwarded to the leadership, while steps would also be taken to promote exports of dried mango and mango pulp.
