LAHORE:

A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking the installation of zebra crossings outside schools across Punjab, citing serious risks to students' safety.

The petitioner, Ismatullah, argued that nearly 75 per cent of schools in the province lack zebra crossings on adjacent roads, exposing children to hazardous traffic conditions and contributing to congestion.

According to the plea, the School Education Department had previously announced plans to install zebra crossings outside educational institutions, but no practical steps have been taken so far.

The petitioner stated that a formal request was also submitted to the relevant authorities, which went unanswered.

The petition maintains that the failure to implement safety measures has resulted in unsafe road environments around schools, putting students at daily risk while commuting.

It further contends that the inaction of authorities reflects administrative negligence and a lack of proper planning for student safety.

The petitioner has requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to ensure the immediate construction of zebra crossings outside all schools across the province.
