The first teaser for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has revealed Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, prompting an immediate and divided response from fans.

The series, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, marks a full reboot of the franchise, with Essiedu stepping into the role made famous by Alan Rickman.

The limited reveal has led to speculation that producers are deliberately withholding more footage of Snape, a central figure in the story, to build anticipation ahead of the show’s expected release in late 2026.

Essiedu, recognised for performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, has faced mixed reactions since his casting was announced. While some fans have welcomed a fresh interpretation, others have been critical due to the show's divergence from Snape's characterisation in the books and the implications of casting a Black man for the role.
