A social media exchange between Burger King and McDonald’s has intensified after a viral video showed McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski taking a modest bite of the chain’s new Big Arch burger.

The Instagram clip featured Kempczinski introducing the 14-ounce Big Arch, which launched nationally this week. Although he stated he “loves this product, it is so good,” viewers questioned his restrained taste test, prompting a wave of online commentary.

“Why does he look like he’s scared to bite it?” one commenter wrote. “Man’s aura screams kale salad,” another added.

Days later, Burger King appeared to respond with a TikTok video featuring its president, Tom Curtis, taking a notably large bite of the company’s updated Whopper. The post was captioned, “Thought we’d replay this,” and was widely interpreted as a pointed reference to the McDonald’s clip.

Social media users quickly fuelled the rivalry.

The exchange follows near-simultaneous menu launches by the two fast food chains. McDonald’s Big Arch burger includes two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white cheddar, crispy onions, slivered onions, lettuce, pickles and a new Big Arch Sauce described as “a tangy, creamy sauce with a perfect balance of mustard, pickle and sweet tomato flavors.”

Burger King’s revised Whopper retains its traditional ingredients but features what the company describes as a more premium bun, improved mayonnaise and new packaging. It marks the first significant update to the Whopper in a decade.
