K-P submits draft law to curb acid attacks

In a significant development toward addressing one of the most horrific forms of violence against women and vulnerable individuals, a detailed draft of the proposed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Acid, Corrosive and Burning Substances Crimes (Prevention and Rehabilitation) Act, 2026 has been officially submitted to the Social Welfare Department for review, processing, and further consideration.

The draft represents the culmination of six years of persistent advocacy and collaborative effort. It originated from the platform of the Women Parliamentary Caucus and was subsequently advanced in a structured, institutional framework by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women (KPCSW).

Led by Ayesha Naeem, the drafting process received vital legal and technical expertise from Asia Khattak. The proposed legislation goes beyond mere punishment by incorporating stringent penalties for perpetrators, a strong enforcement framework, and comprehensive victim-centered provisions. These include guaranteed access to medical treatment, psychological counseling, legal aid, and social rehabilitation programs, all designed to protect victims' rights and facilitate their dignified return to society.

Chairperson of the KPCSW, Dr Sumera Shams, provided crucial guidance and support throughout the initiative, reinforcing the Commission's commitment to legislative progress on gender-based violence.
