Katherine Short, daughter of Martin Short, dies at 42 by apparent suicide, family confirms, seeking privacy

Katherine Short, the adopted daughter of actor Martin Short, died on Monday at the age of 42 by an apparent suicide.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed responding to a reported shooting at her Hollywood Hills, California, home at approximately 6:41 p.m. local time.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” a representative for Martin Short told Page Six. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine Short was the adopted daughter of Martin Short, 75, and his late wife Nancy Dolman, who passed away from cancer in 2010. The couple also adopted sons Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36. Katherine earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies from New York University in 2006, followed by a master’s in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
She worked as a social worker for a private practice and part-time at Amae Health clinic, providing psychotherapy and outreach services. Katherine was also involved with Bring Change 2 Mind, a charity focused on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
For most of her life, Katherine remained out of the public eye, though she attended select events with her father, including a 2023 celebration of her 40th birthday in Hollywood and previous events such as a 2021 pre-Emmy party.
Her passing marks a tragic loss for the Short family, who are asking for privacy as they mourn. Katherine Short is remembered for her contributions to mental health advocacy and the warmth she brought to those around her.
