PA debate flags minority rights issues

The Punjab Assembly witnessed a focused session on human rights and minority issues, where lawmakers raised concerns over representation, allocation of development funds and systemic discrimination.

The session saw a series of pointed questions and responses involving Punjab Minister for Minority Affairs and Human Rights Ramesh Singh Arora.

During the question hour, PML'N's Amjad Ali Javed asked whether minority representatives were consulted about the distribution of development funds.

The minister responded that local administration and minority representatives were involved in guiding the distribution, a claim refuted by several members from minorities present in the house. MPA Amjad Ali also highlighted the historical context, stating that the foundation of Pakistan involved separate representation for Muslims, Hindus, and Christians. "Today, minorities are demanding separate electoral representation again. Deviating from our original framework has contributed to ongoing problems," he said.

Several members pointed out issues with fund allocation. A PPP minority MPA said people from minorities were ignored during festivals like Holi and Diwali.

PML-N legislator Arshad Malik alleged favouritism in the issuance of Minority Cards and lack of consultation regarding Christmas celebrations.
