The arrested suspect has been identified as Adnan. Police say a car stolen two months ago from the New Town area was recovered from his possession.
A police constable, identified as Umair, was also struck by a bullet during the incident but remained unharmed due to wearing a bulletproof jacket.
Senior police officers reached the scene following the incident, and a search operation is underway in the surrounding area to arrest the absconding suspect.
The injured suspect was shifted to the hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the arrested man was a known offender and had previously been involved in several car theft cases in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
In a statement, Rawalpindi Chief Police Officer Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani praised the police team for their response, saying those who endanger public safety and attack law enforcement will not escape legal action.
