What’s in a name?

Letter September 23, 2011
It would be far better if we changed our mentality and our attitudes.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Dr Pervez Tahir’s article of September 23 titled “Time to rename Abbottabad”. Why not start the name change from other cities, like, say, Peshawar, which had a different name to begin with? Why not also rename Wah as ‘Gandhara’ and change names of several other towns and cities? In India they changed names, too, of many a city but people call them what they have always called them.

In Pakistan, take the case of Lahore’s Jinnah Gardens. How many people call them that and how many use the old name ‘Lawrence Gardens’? The same is probably true of Faisalabad as well since many people still call it Lyallpur.

Rather than change names of our cities and towns, it would be far better if we changed our mentality and our attitudes since doing so could bring about some much-needed real change in our society.
