Dame Prue Leith has announced she is stepping down as a judge on The Great British Bake Off after nine seasons on the beloved baking competition show. The long‑running culinary expert, who joined the series in 2017 when it moved from the BBC to Channel 4, said now feels like the right time to step back at age 86.

In a heartfelt statement, Leith said Bake Off has been “a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years” and that she has “genuinely loved” her time on the show.

She thanked her fellow judge Paul Hollywood, hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, and the production teams for their support. Leith added that she looks forward to spending more time on personal passions, including enjoying summers in her garden, and feels lucky to have been part of the programme.

Leith’s tenure on the series included judging contestants through more than 400 challenges, and she quickly became a fan favourite for her warmth, culinary expertise, and light‑hearted presence in the tent. She took over judging duties from Mary Berry, who departed the show alongside its move to Channel 4, and formed a long-standing partnership with Paul Hollywood.

In announcing her departure, Leith said, “But now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!). There’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden.” She also expressed confidence in whoever will succeed her on the show, saying, “Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have.”

Channel 4 and Bake Off producers paid tribute to Leith’s contribution, praising her generosity, wit, and passion for encouraging amateur bakers over the years. Fans and former contestants have already shared their admiration for Leith’s impact on the show, acknowledging her encouragement and inspiration.

Leith’s departure marks the end of an era for The Great British Bake Off, but also the beginning of a new chapter as the show looks ahead to its next judge and another season later this year.
