Attack on 'pir' linked to succession dispute

Police register murder case as attackers were identified as stepbrothers

RAWALPINDI:

The assassination attempt on Pir Ali Imam Jilani in the area of Rawat police station has emerged as an alleged outcome of a property and succession dispute.

Police registered a case under sections of murder, attempted murder and abetment of crime on the statement of injured driver Mian Ahmad Nawaz. All the accused named for direct firing and abetment are stepbrothers of Pir Ali Imam Jilani.

SSP Investigation Rawalpindi, Nasir Ali, visited the crime scene and reviewed the progress of the investigation. According to the FIR, driver Mian Ahmad Nawaz Qadri stated that Pir Syed Abdul Qadir Shah, before his death last year, had during his lifetime declared Pir Syed Ali Imam Jilani as his successor and distributed his entire property among his children. He also transferred Idara Qadriya Jilaniya International Hussainiya Sharif and its attached properties to Pir Syed Ali Imam Jilani.

Due to this grievance, the accused - including Rahim Shah, Hamza Haider and four unidentified persons, armed with Kalashnikovs and other weapons - attacked Pir Syed Ali Imam Jilani and his companions while they were travelling from Qadriya Jilaniya International Hussainiya Sharif to Jamia Masjid Faiz Saroba, Kallar Syedan.

As a result of Rahim Shah's firing, Shafqat Hussain was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Due to firing by Hamza Haider, Pir Syed Ali Imam Jilani sustained bullet injuries to both legs, while the complainant driver Mian Ahmad Nawaz was also injured in the firing.

The injured were immediately shifted to a local hospital and later referred to Civil Hospital Rawalpindi. The motive of the attack, according to the complainant, was the grievance over the property distribution and succession decision made by Pir Syed Abdul Qadir Shah in favor of Pir Syed Ali Imam Jilani.

The FIR also accuses Naqeeb Shah, Haseeb Shah and Anwar-ul-Haq Shah of planning the attack and abetment of the crime.

Police have registered a case against all named and unidentified accused and started an investigation. Police officials said raids are being conducted at various locations for the arrest of the accused. SSP Investigation Nasir Ali, after visiting the scene, ordered the immediate arrest of the culprits and directed that the case be concluded on the basis of true facts. He stated that those who attack the lives and property of citizens will not escape the law.
