Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Monday morning in Hollywood after police said he assaulted a ride-hail driver and made criminal threats during the encounter.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded around 12:15 a.m. to a report of an assault near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. Investigators determined that Sutherland had entered a rideshare vehicle, physically confronted the driver and issued threats, police said.

The 59-year-old actor was taken into custody at the scene and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. Jail records show he was later released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 2.

Police said the driver did not suffer injuries requiring medical treatment. Detectives with the LAPD’s Hollywood Division are continuing to investigate the incident.

Representatives for Sutherland did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Sutherland is widely known for his role as Jack Bauer on the television series 24, as well as for film appearances in Stand by Me, A Few Good Men and The Lost Boys. He has faced legal issues in the past, including multiple DUI arrests and a 2007 jail sentence related to probation violations.

An assault charge in 2009 was later dropped, and he was last arrested on suspicion of DUI in 2020.
