The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held on January 11, 2026, drew a largely positive response from audiences, though not without criticism. The ceremony, which honored films including One Battle After Another and Hamnet, featured standout performances, sharp humor, emotional speeches, and several moments that divided viewers.

Comedian Nikki Glaser returned as host and was widely praised for her opening monologue, which set the tone for the evening. Glaser delivered pointed jokes referencing Hollywood, media organizations, and major celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, and George Clooney. Her commentary on recent news coverage and public controversies drew strong reactions in the room and online.

Another widely discussed moment came from actress and singer Teyana Taylor, who won best supporting actress for her role in One Battle After Another in what was considered a surprise victory. Taylor used her acceptance speech to express gratitude to director Paul Thomas Anderson and to deliver an emotional message celebrating “little Brown girls,” emphasizing representation, self-worth, and visibility.

Julia Roberts also received attention during the ceremony. Nominated for best actress for After the Hunt, Roberts was met with a surprise standing ovation marking her return to the Golden Globes after a lengthy absence. She used her time onstage to praise filmmaker Eva Victor.

The evening included lighter moments as well, such as Rose Byrne’s acceptance speech after winning best actress in a musical or comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Byrne humorously explained that her husband, actor Bobby Cannavale, was absent because he attended a reptile expo in New Jersey to purchase a bearded dragon, a comment that drew laughter from the audience.

Actor Don Cheadle made an unannounced appearance alongside longtime collaborator George Clooney while presenting the final award of the night. The pair shared playful banter referencing their past films and Clooney’s awards history, adding a nostalgic element to the ceremony.

However, the broadcast also faced criticism. The nearly three-and-a-half-hour runtime felt excessive, with certain segments failing to engage viewers. The use of a DJ-style music playlist between speeches was widely panned, as was the recurring visual display showing nominees’ seating locations in the ballroom, which some viewers found distracting and unnecessary.

Despite these criticisms, the ceremony was largely seen as a successful return to form for the Golden Globes, bolstered by energetic hosting, high-profile reunions, and emotionally resonant speeches.
