Scott Van Pelt narrowly avoided an awkward on-air moment during ESPN’s late-night SportsCenter broadcast on New Year’s Eve, demonstrating quick judgement during an unexpected live television situation.

The incident occurred just after midnight on January 1, 2026, as ESPN’s coverage intersected with its parent network’s traditional Times Square ball-drop footage. As cameras panned across the celebrating crowd in New York, viewers saw the usual scenes associated with the New Year, including hugs, cheers and kisses among revellers.

Van Pelt, who has hosted the late edition of SportsCenter since 2015, initially reacted with humour to the unusual visuals appearing during a sports programme. “Yeah, live makeouts on SportsCenter. Get into it,” he said, maintaining a light tone as the broadcast continued.
