Millie Bobby Brown’s previous comments about plastic surgery rumours have returned to the spotlight following renewed online scrutiny of her appearance in Stranger Things Season 5.
The actor, who plays Eleven in Netflix’s flagship series, has been widely discussed on social media after clips from the new season went viral.
Some viewers claimed her facial expressions appeared different in certain scenes, leading to speculation about cosmetic procedures. Others strongly defended Brown, urging critics to stop policing her appearance and warning against drawing conclusions based on brief clips.
As the discussion gathered pace, attention turned back to remarks Brown made earlier this year during the press tour for The Electric State. Speaking to British Vogue in March 2025, the 21-year-old described the emotional impact of headlines and speculation suggesting she had undergone plastic surgery. “I was depressed for three, four days. I was crying every day,” she said.
She also criticised the tone of coverage she encountered at the time. “‘Oh my God, what has she done with her face? Why has she gone blonde? She looks 60 years old!’ I respect journalism. I love reading articles on my favorite people and hearing what they’re up to. I understand that there’s paparazzi, even though it’s invasive, even though it feels like sh*t to me – I know that’s your job… But don’t, in your headline, slam me at the get-go. It is so wrong and it is bullying, especially to young girls who are new to this industry and are already questioning everything about it.”
Brown added that public expectations around her appearance have been difficult as she has grown up in the public eye. “For some reason people can’t seem to grow up with me. Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time… And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
Stranger Things Season 5 has drawn mixed reactions overall, with some episodes praised and others criticised, including the lowest recorded IMDb ratings for episode 7.
The series finale is set to premiere globally on December 31, 2025.
