Govt urges climate funds in UNFCCC review

A high-level meeting between Secretary for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Aisha Humera Chaudhry and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell reviewed the country's updated climate commitments and outstanding financing needs on the sidelines of COP30 in Belem.

According to an official statement issued on Wednesday, both sides discussed key negotiation themes and Pakistan's progress on climate reporting. Chaudhry said the government submitted its Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) in September 2025, setting an enhanced mitigation pathway through 2035. She noted that Pakistan has increased its domestically financed mitigation contribution from 15% to 17%, signalling continued commitment. However, she stressed that achieving the full 50% emissions-reduction target depends on international climate finance, estimated at $565 billion by 2035. She said earlier pledges have yet to materialise at the required scale, slowing global progress toward the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C goal.

Highlighting the country's fragile mountain ecosystem, she briefed Stiell on efforts to raise global awareness of accelerating glacier melt and cryosphere threats.
