Senator Abro's resignation put on hold
PTI dissident Senator Saifullah Abro
Action on the resignation of PTI dissident Senator Saifullah Abro has been halted amid the ongoing debate over the 27th Constitutional Amendment, as the Senate chairman has not yet signed the resignation submitted by the lawmaker.
Despite Abro's resignation being tendered in Parliament, the Senate Secretariat has not initiated formal proceedings, and the chairman has refrained from verifying or forwarding the matter for further action.
As a result, a reference under Article 63-A, which deals with disqualification on grounds of defection, has also not been sent.
Senator Abro, who had defected from the PTI after voting in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, had submitted his resignation to the upper house earlier.
However, with the chairman's approval pending, the resignation remains legally incomplete, leaving his parliamentary status in limbo as the government pushes ahead with the 27th Amendment bill.
PTI has also moved to expel the lawmaker for defying the party policy. The party also distanced itself from Senator Abro, who has been removed from all communication channels, including the parliamentary party's WhatsApp group. The party also decided to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to immediately terminate his senatorship.
