Actress Sydney Sweeney is facing mounting criticism from within Hollywood after refusing to comment on the controversy surrounding her American Eagle advertisement and ongoing speculation linking her to MAGA politics.

The 28-year-old Euphoria star remained silent during a recent GQ interview, despite being repeatedly asked about the backlash.

Journalist Katherine Stoeffel questioned Sydney about the criticism of her American Eagle campaign, which sparked debate over whether white creators should make light of issues related to genetic superiority in today’s political climate. Sweeney’s brief response was, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

Her short reply has led to further backlash online, with several prominent celebrities engaging with a viral Instagram reel criticising her lack of accountability. Among those who “liked” the post were singer SZA, actress Christina Ricci, and Aimee Lou Wood, signalling growing disapproval within the entertainment community.

The viral video, shared by Instagram user @jupiterbaal, featured Sweeney’s GQ clip alongside commentary that read, “She was given the opportunity to push back and she didn’t. Therefore, she’s in on it.” The post accused Sweeney of avoiding responsibility while promoting herself as an artist who claims to tackle complex ideas through her work.

Writer and academic Roxane Gay also appeared in the clip, referencing the political leanings of Republican voters across the United States.

Moreoever, Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens also criticised Sweeney by resharing a post on his Instgram Story that said, "Sydney Sweeney's GQ interview is a reminder that "not having a stance" on white supremacy is 100% having a stance on white supremacy".

Though Sweeney has never publicly expressed support for Donald Trump or MAGA policies, public records indicate she is registered as a Republican voter.
