Veteran politician and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Senator Irfan Siddiqui has died after suffering severe respiratory complications.

The 68-year-old had been admitted to a hospital in Islamabad earlier this week and was reported to be in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU). According to his family, he was admitted due to breathing difficulties.

Siddiqui was a long-time columnist, political commentator and a senior figure within the PML-N. He served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Affairs and was the party’s parliamentary leader in the Senate.

His absence was noted during the Senate’s recent passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, in which the government secured a two-thirds majority. Party members and his parliamentary colleagues expressed deep sorrow.
