CCTV footage of the explosion that occurred at the air conditioning (AC) gas plant inside the Supreme Court of Pakistan has surfaced, shedding new light on the incident that shook the apex court premises.

According to Express News, the blast took place on Tuesday in the basement canteen of the Supreme Court, where the AC gas plant is located. The explosion injured at least 12 people, who were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries.

The powerful blast caused tremors across the Supreme Court building, prompting an emergency response. Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) and a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) team rushed to the site and carried out a thorough inspection of the affected area.

Speaking to media representatives, the IGP said the explosion occurred around 10:55am inside the canteen due to a gas leak in the AC system. “Twelve individuals sustained injuries, three were shifted to PIMS Hospital, while nine were taken to Polyclinic Hospital. Two are in critical condition,” he confirmed.

He added that preliminary investigations and expert assessments confirmed the blast was caused by gas leakage, not an explosive device. “There had been a persistent gas leak for several days in the canteen. The explosion occurred during maintenance work on the AC unit,” the IG said.

Most of the injured were AC technicians, with one suffering burns on nearly 80 per cent of his body. Relevant authorities have launched an inquiry to determine lapses in safety measures and maintenance protocols at the facility.
