A polio worker was shot dead by armed assailants in Karachi's Ahsanabad, while Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and directed police to arrest the perpetrators immediately.
The incident occurred on Thursday near Jamia Al-Rashid Madrasa on the Super Highway when the victim, identified as Rahmanullah, 30, a resident of Scheme 33 Quetta Town and father of two, was riding his motorcycle to work. He was employed as a field monitor for an NGO, responsible for administering vaccines in Yusuf Goth, Surjani Town.
According to police, three unknown gunmen on a motorcycle tried to stop him. When he did not comply, they opened fire, hitting him in the abdomen. Rahmanullah was pronounced dead at the scene. A .30 bore pistol shell was recovered, and CCTV footage is being reviewed.
Rahmanullah’s family confirmed that all his belongings, including his mobile phone, wallet, and motorcycle, were intact, supporting their claim that the attack was an attempted robbery rather than a targeted assault.
The family also highlighted past incidents in the area, including killing of Mansoor Mahsud by armed robbers, and called for stronger law enforcement. “This was not a case of personal enmity. The attackers tried to stop him to rob him, and when he did not stop, they fired,” said a family member.
Sohrab Goth DSP Aurangzeb Khattak said eyewitnesses confirmed the sequence of events. The assailants first fired to stop Rahmanullah and then shot him again further along the road, causing fatal injuries. Police are investigating the case from two to three angles, he added.
Sindh CM directs police to arrest perpetrators
The chief minister expressed deep grief over the killing of polio worker Rahmanullah in Ahsanabad.
“Polio workers are the protectors of our children’s future. Attacks on them are attacks on humanity and societal safety,” said Shah. He directed police and the administration to arrest the perpetrators immediately and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the martyred volunteer.
