But hang on a minute. Exactly what has he been accused of? Well, to recap, he has been accused of breaking the Bosnia arms embargo and supplying arms to the besieged Bosnian Muslims who, according to the dominant narrative of the times, must of course be bloodthirsty terrorists waging a war against freedom, mom and apple pie. Except that they weren’t. They were the victims, outgunned and massacred by a Serb militia which was being provided weapons and men by the Serbian government which, in turn, was being supported by their Slavic cousins, the Russians. Meanwhile, the Croatians could smuggle in arms through their coastline; embargo be damned.
This is the same embargo that Bill Clinton, as a presidential candidate, vowed to oppose. Once he was president of course, he changed his mind saying that to do so would “convert a complex ethnic war into an American responsibility”. When Congress voted to lift the embargo, he vetoed it. At the same time, according to Congressional documents made available by the Federation of American Scientists, he “secretly let it be known in Iran that the United States would not oppose huge, illegal arms shipments to the Bosnian Moslems”. I’m still waiting for The Hague to summon him.
And who put the embargo in effect in the first place? Why, the UN of course — which also was kind enough to place peacekeepers on the ground in Bosnia. The blue helmets did an exemplary job of protecting the Bosnian civilians in various places such as, shall we say, Srebrenica. If your ancient history is a little rusty, that’s a small town that was singled out for ‘cleansing’ by none other than Serb commander and indicted war criminal Ratko Mladic. In 1995, four years into the embargo, there were tens of thousands of civilians sheltering in the town. They thought they were safe because, after all, the UN had declared it a ‘safe area’ and valiant Dutch peacekeepers were on hand to protect the innocent. The Dutch peacekeepers did a great job too, with their commander meeting Mladic for drinks on July 12 1995. A day later, the Dutch handed over 5,000 Bosnian Muslim refugees to the Serbs in exchange for 14 peacekeepers that the Serbs had been holding. Then, the first killings began. When the guns finally fell silent, an estimated 8,000 civilians had been murdered. For a little perspective, that’s about three times as many as those who died in the 9/11 attacks. Srebinica is now a part of Serbia. Mission accomplished, Mr Mladic.
All this happened while the UN and the West were falling over themselves trying to avoid calling the killings what they were: genocide. There’s a reason for that. Thanks to laws put in place after the holocaust, genocide is an international crime, and would require action being taken to prevent it.
For the record, I must mention that if there’s one western leader who did try to do the right thing, it was Margaret Thatcher — the Iron Lady herself. From the outset she demanded that Bosnia be armed and the embargo lifted.
As for Mladic himself, a man who has more blood on his hands than Osama bin Laden, as late as 2009, he was partying in Serbian army barracks and going on ski vacations. Not a bad life for someone who was the object of an international UN-mandated manhunt. The charges against Javed Nasir, by the way, are in part based on Mladic’s testimony. I personally think he should get a medal but yes, If Mr Nasir did in fact break the embargo, he was in violation of international law. But if he is to stand trial, so should Mr Clinton, the entire Russian high command and countless others. But let’s face it, this is not about law or principle; it’s about power. They have it, we don’t.

What is the highest medal that we can award to a citizen in or out of uniform, for heroic bravery and going into harms way to protect innocent civilians from being butchered ?. That should go to Gen. Javed, if it hasn't already. . I will just say this, that Clinton gave the orders to bomb Belgrade. It's probably the only time, in the history of the world that a western Christian nation bombed another western Christian nation, to save Muslim lives. The Serbs in the US at the time, made a huge hue and cry, just about this Christian-Muslim angle. Go figure. . We have to commend a few other names, like Madeline Albright (Jewish), who didn't shirk from her responsibilities as Sec. of State to respond with lethal force, unlike Larry Eagleburger who stood and watched the Muslim massacres in Yugoslavia from (1991-1993), while George Bush Sr. was in the Whitehouse. . The idea to try Gen Javed, after all that has been discovered and made clear on the ground in Bosnia... would be a travesty of titanic proportions.
I agree with Ashwin and want to say that this is a habbit of people just to like and comment on others issues no one bothers that Bosnian were dying and whatever is going on :(((((
The graves are there ! the Men and male children are gone ! Mladic is on holiday ! Clinton at large ! The damage has been done and justice is pending and we are being asked to hand over another lamb to the slaughter !! who dared to remind the world of the Genocide . State and International law are tools which will execute the commands of those in whose hands they reside. Plain and simple. Think without prejudice.
So Bosnians were not that helpless, innocent victims as we were told before. And it seems the Serbs were correct when they accoused the west of hatching a conspiracy to break Yugoslavia.
Nice article sir, I expect nothing from these converts except extreme hatred for anything remotely related to Pakistan. The sadder part is most of the people replying are from Pakistan themselves.
2 wrongs do not make one right
Let him go to trial so he can clear his name.
@Nadir, Wasan,Miek
Times have changed and now in hind sight we are criticizing what we had done very willingly for the oppressed people of Bosnia, more than fifteen years ago. Support for the Bosnians was the official policy of the Government of Pakistan and the entire nation was on board. If any one has any doubt he should better look through the news papers of that time to find out the truth. More over the provision of weapons to Bosnian Muslims was under taken with the tacit approval of US other wise can you ever imagine Pakistan embarking upon an adventure which could have been easily blocked by the west in high seas. Singling out one person for this act cannot be justified. The Government of Pakistan and the people of Pakistan should share the responsibility and firmly stand behind the vetran soldier.
"Sam 15 hours ago Reply And a quick nod from someone that happened to be on the ground when the help arrived. The shipment of Pakistani Green Arrow anti-tank weapon systems was instrumental in defending Sarajevo and in effect negating the advantage of Serb armor divisions and turning their tanks into canons really.
Thank you for the support, it has not been forgotten."
Thanks for the article and for all the desi liberals read the above para.
Plus some one spoke of Clinton's action. Sorry to say he kept sleeping till these anti tank missles reached the Muslims and the matter was referred to UN.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the General Nasir, else we would ahve seen another Kashmir, Palestine or for the sake of the history the New Ishbaliyah.
@Nadir: ....you just don't get it do you......bless. Javed Nasir will not be understood by your sorts. Thank You General Nasir.
If you find international court and UN so irrelevent then why shouting about UN resolution in Kashmir, they were issued in Pakistan's favor only becuase pak was a USA ally at that time.
The writer choses to ignore the massive number of Muslim lives saves due to NATO bombings and Bill Clinton's actions.
All for bravado, IF it was justified by the elected representatives of the state. It wasn't. Violating state and international laws just because you were in the Army - that answers to no one, is NO excuse to wrap yourself in the flag of religion.
Let us not lose any sleep - we will figure out ways to outmaneouver and tire the international community. The civilian set up will rubber stamp whatever the GHQ dictates.
@Khurram: and what about the pain you muslims are giving to the rest of the world? wherever you are,u want independece.i mean is their no country that satisfies you? whichever country on earth has a muslim minority also has a terrorism problem, have you ever asked urself the question why that is.and believe you me all this rubbish about "we muslims are one body" is utter nonsence,u only have to visit or live in an arab country to realise that.
Khurram : How long you guys will argue such irrational logic. Except some lunatics in Pakistan, nobody in any muslim countries support such theories. Ask Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi, Syria, The list goes on, The muslims are divided among themselves much more than anyone else could dream, And the divisions do not and have not and will not co exist peacefully. Pakistan and Afganistan are living examples for this statement. Iran iraq war, the forgotten war is another example for this statement. Get off your theories and learn to live in this world with some civility
if we can,we should help not only our muslim brothers but other opressed ones, morally as well as physically. but are we in a position to do so. our own house must be in order. on the one hand we keep killing one another, abusing each other and cannot defend our own selves and on the other hand we involve ourselves to protect those far away. this is a point to ponder. a point of clarification: isi is an organ of state and general so and so or so and so cannot act on his own. as for as international justice is concerned it is just a hoax. what to talk of bigwigs, even an ordinary citizen of a powerful country and that from a small weak country are not equal
Ha its those same Pakistanis who ask us to adhere to UN resolutions in Kashmir, who break the rules of that same body elsewere. Thanks,
Srebinica is in Bosnia not Serbia, sir :) but otherwise nice article
Muslims are a united body, if one organ has pain, the other one feels it. No matters it is kashmir or bosnia or palestine. We are united and only muslims nothing else. These are evil plans to divide muslims, but they have to be united against this evil, who is evil, everybody knows it...
You would have to be blind to believe that the Bosnians didn't have weapons or support! Thousands of Muhajideen fighters came to Bosnia and supported them while using medical posts as weapons facilities. What's more is that not one single organization could actually validate the numbers of civilian casualties that were so randomly thrown into the news. I do however agree that Clinton should be at the Hague!
Whatever Javed Nasir did at that time was absolutely in line with his official duty and the policy of the Government of Pakistan. He should therefore be provided with the best available legal support by the state.
The guy should hzve kicked out of army in the first place. Who gave him the authority to wage an international jehad. It is the religous nuts like him that are the source of Pakistani malaise.
Rather than pointing to foreign hypocrisy, the more pertinent question is that under whose sanction was the former ISI chief. Was he doing this on his own, was this official Pakistani state policy or another example of the military high command issuing an order without informing their constitutional masters. Whose money was used to do all this? Did Pakistani taxpayers pay for this while many millions struggle in poverty? What was the motivation? Was it because Pakistan's security interests were threatened? or was this another over zealous General who was abusing his position of authority to do what he thought was the right thing to do.
Painting the General as some underdog who took on the powerful is all well and good, but since when are we championing individuals to use state resources to do as they please? Is this not bad governance? Misuse of official privilege? Or are such staple phrases only reserved for politicians?
Maybe General Nasir should have focused on Kashmris instead of faraway Bosnians.
