A man allegedly strangled his wife to death and later set her body ablaze with the assistance of his brother in an incident of domestic violence in Bahawalnagar's suburban locality of Toba Qalandar Shah on Thursday.
According to a spokesperson for the District Police Officer (DPO), the accused, Sajid, killed his wife, Nasreen Bibi, by strangulation before pouring oil on her body and setting it on fire.
Initial investigations suggest that Nasreen was the mother of a young daughter and had been married to Sajid for nearly a decade after the two entered into a love marriage.
Police said the couple's relationship had remained strained since marriage, with frequent disputes arising out of Sajid's suspicions about his wife's character.
Neighbours confirmed that quarrels between the two were a regular occurrence.
On the day of the incident, another heated argument broke out between the couple, after which Nasreen left for her parents' home.
Sajid, however, managed to persuade her to return, only to allegedly murder her in cold blood once back home.
Investigators revealed that Sajid, with his brother's help, strangled Nasreen and then set her body on fire inside their house. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot.
Rescue and police teams rushed to the scene soon after receiving information and shifted the body to the District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem.
Officials said the autopsy report will provide further clarity on the exact sequence of events.
DPO Bahawalnagar Kamran Asghar took notice of the incident and directed the local Saddar Police to launch immediate action.
Sajid was arrested within hours, while raids are underway to apprehend his brother, who remains at large.
Police stated that facts will be made public following the post-mortem and further investigation.
