QUETTA:

At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with an oil-laden vehicle on the CPEC route in Balochistan's Panjgur district on Saturday, sparking a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles.

Police sources said the accident was caused by speeding.

Initial reports confirmed five deaths, but the toll rose to six after one of the injured succumbed to burns before reaching the hospital. Later, two more victims died of their injuries, bringing the total fatalities to eight.

Rescue officials told The Express Tribune that bodies and the injured were immediately shifted to Panjgur Teaching Hospital, where treatment of the wounded was underway. The rescue operation was later completed.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and identified speeding as the preliminary cause.

The tragedy has once again exposed the grim state of road safety in Balochistan, where poor road infrastructure and unfit vehicles often result in deadly accidents.

Local residents and rights groups have renewed calls for stricter safety measures along the CPEC route.

Meanwhile, rescue officials confirmed that four people were killed in Khnuzai when a vehicle overturned after losing control.
