ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a detailed reply from the Sindh and federal governments on why the flood inquiry report had not been implemented. Deeming the government’s attitude ‘dismissive’, the court asked for replies by September 22.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard a complaint filed by former member of the National Assembly Marvi Memon. On Monday, Memon submitted documentary evidence before the court saying that the flood commission’s recommendation report had not been implemented at all.

Memon contended that many lives could have been saved and large-scale destruction avoided if the flood commission’s recommendations had been implemented.  The chief justice and Justice Tariq agreed with the contentions.

After last year’s floods, the apex court had constituted a flood inquiry commission, which submitted its report in June. The commission had said that negligent and corrupt officials contributed to the loss of life and exacerbated the devastation caused by the floods.
