Michael Che says Kanye West apologized to him years after a backstage confrontation during the rapper’s 2018 appearance on Saturday Night Live.
The Weekend Update coanchor, 42, discussed the incident on SiriusXM’s The Bonfire on September 25, following the release of West’s documentary In Whose Name?, which included footage of the argument.
Che recalled that after West delivered an unscripted rant during the show, he confronted the rapper, saying, “I'm the Black comedian that made a joke about Cosby. That's f---ed up. Why'd you do that to me?”
Witnesses, including rapper Consequence, stepped in to de-escalate the situation.
Years later, Che ran into West at an Eddie Murphy show, where West immediately apologized, saying, “I owe you an apology.” Che said the apology resolved the matter, and he never brought it up again.
Che noted that he hadn’t discussed the incident much publicly before, emphasizing that West “was not behaving like himself” during the original 2018 SNL visit.
