Tate McRae has returned with her latest single ‘Tit For Tat’, released on September 24, and fans believe the lyrics may be a direct response to her recent split from The Kid Laroi.

The track follows her collaboration ‘Just Keep Watching’ and marks her first solo release since February’s So Close to What.

The timing has heightened speculation as McRae and The Kid Laroi ended their relationship earlier this year after a year of dating. Following the breakup, The Kid Laroi referenced their split in his track ‘A Cold Play’, a move which many believe prompted McRae’s lyrical reply.

‘Tit For Tat’ takes its name from a British phrase meaning retaliation in kind, and McRae’s delivery suggests she is addressing her ex’s decision to put their breakup into music.

She makes her stance clear with lines such as: Thought I might love you again, see how I feel / Now that you're acting like that, boy I never will. Later, she alludes to him moving on with someone new: Last night, she answered my call, it sealed the deal / Right now, I’m even about you.

Further lyrics strengthen the speculation that the track is aimed at The Kid Laroi, particularly when McRae sings: Let’s go song for song, let’s go back to back / Let’s go tit for tat, boy, you asked for that. Fans interpret these words as a direct challenge, framing the release as her side of the story.

While McRae has not confirmed the song’s subject, the lyrical references and timing have left little doubt in the minds of listeners.

Until the singer comments publicly, the speculation around whether ‘Tit For Tat’ is her reply to The Kid Laroi remains central to the conversation surrounding the single.
