Attack on Titan has been overtaken in anime rankings by Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, according to MyAnimeList (MAL). The site, one of the most widely used anime databases, places Frieren in first place with a score of 9.29.

In comparison, Attack on Titan’s highest-rated entry, Season 3 Part 2, holds a score of 9.05, placing it in fourth position overall.

Attack on Titan, which began airing in 2013, became a global hit with its dark themes and action-driven narrative. Across four seasons and multiple films, the series achieved consistently high ratings, with its first season alone scoring 8.56 on MAL. For over a decade, it stood alongside Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as one of the platform’s most acclaimed titles.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, adapted from the manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, premiered after Attack on Titan concluded.

Its first season quickly drew strong reception in Japan and internationally, praised by viewers for its focus on reflection and the aftermath of an adventurer’s journey. Frieren’s success not only pushed Attack on Titan down in ranking but also ended Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’s long-standing position at number one.

The anime’s director, Keiichirou Saitou, has noted a desire to highlight the wider appeal of anime beyond its most dominant themes, stating, “I have a desire to create works that can draw the world’s attention through a variety of approaches.”

A second season of Frieren is already scheduled to release in January 2026. It is expected to air alongside Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, marking a competitive start to the new year for anime fans.

In the meantime, viewers can stream all episodes of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End on Crunchyroll, while the manga has also resumed publication following a brief hiatus.
