Marvel actress Tatiana Maslany has urged fans to cancel their Disney+ subscriptions in protest of Disney’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live.
On September 17, ABC confirmed the late-night show would be pulled from its schedule “indefinitely” following remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel during a monologue criticising political responses to recent violence. The decision came after comments from Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr, who suggested affiliates could face licence issues if the programme continued.
Nexstar soon announced it would pre-empt Kimmel’s programme, leading Disney to remove the show entirely. The move has attracted criticism from industry unions, political figures, and Hollywood actors who see it as a threat to free speech.
Maslany, best known for playing She-Hulk in Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, expressed her support for Kimmel via Instagram. Sharing a behind-the-scenes image from the series, she wrote: “Cancel your Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN subscriptions.” Her call has drawn both praise and backlash, echoing the divided response that has often accompanied her Marvel career.
Several fellow Marvel stars have also voiced solidarity. Marisa Tomei encouraged followers to boycott Disney brands, while Jameela Jamil warned that freedom of speech was at stake. Pedro Pascal, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista posted messages of support for Kimmel, emphasising the need to defend comedy and commentary.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus added her criticism, writing that she stood for “free speech” and “democracy” while condemning ABC’s actions.
The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live remains in effect, with Disney yet to confirm if or when the programme will return.
