The KPop Demon Hunters franchise is expanding with a newly rated short film titled Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story.

Classified in official listings as an animated subject from Sony Pictures Entertainment, the project has been given a PG rating for “some action/violence and scary images.”

While plot details remain undisclosed, the title suggests a possible origin story for the fictional girl group Huntr/x or a side narrative connected to the main film. Sony has yet to confirm whether the short will premiere on Netflix, in cinemas, or as additional franchise content.

The announcement follows the strong global impact of KPop Demon Hunters, which premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025.

The animated musical fantasy, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, fused K-pop with urban fantasy, following Huntr/x as they balanced pop stardom with secret demon-hunting duties.

Its distinct visuals, cultural depth, and original soundtrack helped the film achieve significant milestones, including 266 million views, making it Netflix’s most-watched original.

The soundtrack also gained international success, placing multiple tracks in the Top 10 on Spotify and the Billboard Hot 100.

However, due to Sony’s 2021 fixed-fee deal with Netflix, the studio’s direct earnings were limited despite the film’s popularity. Still, Sony retains rights for sequels and spin-offs, and early discussions regarding a full sequel are already underway.
