Battlefield 6 marks a pivotal moment for the franchise, with the four studios behind it — Ripple Effect, DICE, Criterion, and Motive — aiming to avoid the rocky launches of previous entries. Technical director Christian Buhl and senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson spoke with IGN about what’s new this time.
A key focus is console performance. On PS5, players can choose between Performance Mode (targeting 80+ FPS with reduced visuals) and Fidelity Mode (higher textures and features locked at 60 FPS). On the upcoming PS5 Pro, both modes will run at higher resolutions — up to 2160p — with improved frame rates. Xbox Series X offers similar options, while the Series S runs a single mode: 1080p at 60 FPS.
Developing for Series S posed challenges due to limited memory. Buhl confirmed the team had to make some level and fidelity adjustments to ensure smooth performance.
Crossplay is a major feature. Players can toggle it on or off in-game. By default, it’s enabled — but console players will initially be matched with other console users before PC players are added to fill lobbies. Turning crossplay off enables console-only matchmaking. Nickerson emphasized major aim assist improvements and balance across different inputs, with a redesigned “combat triangle” system to support various combat styles.
Cheating, especially on PC, is being tackled aggressively. Battlefield now includes secure boot, a new anti-cheat system called Javelin, and dedicated teams at both EA and within Battlefield Studios working on detection and enforcement. Buhl admitted cheating can’t be eliminated entirely, but said they’re making it a top priority.
Player feedback has also shaped development. Both BF Labs and the open beta helped refine key systems, including aim assist, loadouts, and objective placement. Changes have been made to balance maps and game modes, though smaller maps from the beta will remain intentionally tight for varied experiences.
Lastly, Battlefield Portal will include a server browser at launch. While expectations vary, the team aims to provide a flexible system — including verified experiences and customizable searches — to satisfy both casual and dedicated players.
With a focus on stability, balance, and player choice, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be the series’ most refined entry yet.
