JHELUM:

Police have arrested and obtained a confession from a suspect in the brutal killing of a man in the Radyala Jango area, officials said on Sunday.

Police identified the accused as Saqlain Sarwar alias Araywala. According to investigators, Saqlain admitted he killed Imran because he wanted to marry the victim's wife. The two men were known to each other and, police say, the suspect had previously harboured unlawful relations with the woman.

Authorities said the suspect lured the victim onto a motorcycle at night, rode a short distance and opened fire, striking Imran twice in the head and once in the leg. The body was discovered the following day. Local residents described Imran as a well-regarded and pious man, and said the murder has left his two young children orphaned.

Chotala police tracked and arrested Saqlain using CCTV footage. Police said they have recovered evidence and secured a five-day remand to continue the investigation.

A case has been registered and further legal proceedings are under way.

Residents have appealed to District Police Officer Tariq Sandhu to ensure the suspect faces the full rigour of the law.
