Amanda Seyfried has suggested that a third Mamma Mia! film may eventually move forward, though she cautioned that its future depends on studio decisions.

Speaking to Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, Seyfried was asked whether the ABBA-inspired franchise could see another sequel. “It is, yes,” she replied, before adding more carefully, “I think.” The actress, who first starred in the 2008 musical adaptation and returned for the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, said the cast remains supportive of the idea. “We all said, ‘Yeah, definitely,’” she noted. “It’s our way of marketing and getting support. Big movies like that are all about studio timing.”

Seyfried also pointed out how scheduling and priorities influence whether projects are greenlit. She recalled that the timing of the 2018 sequel was connected to the long-awaited adaptation of Wicked, which eventually premiered in 2024 starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. “I remember they did Mamma Mia! 2 instead of Wicked. They could only do one big movie at that time, so we ended up slotting into that,” she said.

Franchise producer Judy Craymer echoed Seyfried’s optimism earlier this year. In an interview with Deadline in May, Craymer confirmed that a script for a third film exists. “We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” she said. Craymer emphasized that the project is not about repeating past successes, but about reconnecting audiences with characters they love. “The movie is important for me creatively more than anything. But also because I think the world needs another fun experience.”

If developed, the third installment would likely reunite returning cast members including Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård.
