LAHORE:

PML-N candidate Rana Sanaullah was elected senator from Punjab in a by-election on Tuesday, securing 250 votes.

According to official results, a total of 251 ballots were retrieved from the ballot box, of which 250 were declared valid while one was rejected.

Reacting to Sanaullah's victory, PM Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the senior PML-N leader and extended his best wishes, expressing confidence that the newly elected senator would play an active role in effective lawmaking in the upper house.

"Senators have an important role in strengthening the federation and upholding democratic values," the prime minister said in a statement, adding that the Senate elections reflected the continuity of the democratic process.

The contest was largely one-sided after PTI boycotted the election process, making clear that any member participating in the vote would be defying party policy.

Nevertheless, the opposition fielded Salma Ijaz, wife of Ejaz Chaudhry. The seat had fallen vacant following the disqualification of PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an anti-terrorism court in cases linked to the May 9 riots.
