ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan's Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan held a meeting with Bangladesh's Adviser for Food Ali Imam Majumdar in Dhaka on Friday to discuss possible collaborations in food security.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on rice trade signed between the Trading Corporation of Pakistan and the Directorate General of Food, Bangladesh in January 2025, under which Pakistan delivered 50,000 metric tons of rice. It was agreed that the MoU would serve as a gateway for regular exchanges of delegations at both government-to-government and business-to-business levels for enhancing trade in essential commodities.

The minister noted that the upcoming 3rd International Food and Agricultural Exhibition (FoodAg), scheduled to be held in Karachi on November 25-27, 2025, provides an opportunity for Bangladeshi businesses and government officials to have in-depth understanding of Pakistan's agricultural landscape. The two sides stressed the need for enhancing yields of crops by improving agricultural practices to meet the growing demand for food commodities in both countries.

Separately, Jam Kamal and Bangladesh's Adviser for Commerce Bashiruddin held discussions on advancing economic cooperation, promoting mutual investment and strengthening bilateral trade.

The two countries are in the process of establishing a joint working group on trade to foster greater trade cooperation.

They agreed to reactivate the Joint Economic Commission to work out a comprehensive strategy for trade, investment and economic collaboration. The last meeting of the commission was held in 2005.

It was also agreed to form a joint trade commission, which would present a road map and set goals for future commercial ties.
