Sony increases PlayStation 5 prices in US as tariffs and market slowdown drive costs higher

Sony has confirmed that prices for its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States will increase by around $50 (£37) from August 21. The company cited rising costs and a weakening video games market as reasons for the decision.

In a blog post, Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the current landscape as a “challenging economic environment.”

She added that the new pricing will affect all three PS5 models, including the recently launched Pro version, which will now carry a recommended retail price of $749.99.

The standard edition of the PlayStation 5 will rise to $499.99. Sony confirmed that the cost of PS5 accessories will remain unchanged and that no further adjustments for other countries are planned at this time.

The price rise follows concerns linked to tariffs imposed under the administration of US President Donald Trump. Imports of Japanese goods into the US currently face a 15% tariff, contributing to higher costs for companies such as Sony.

Sony previously raised console prices in the UK and Europe earlier this year, pointing to inflation and currency fluctuations. Similar trends have been observed across the industry.

Nintendo recently raised the cost of its original Switch console, and Microsoft increased prices for Xbox consoles and accessories in several regions.

The move comes amid broader warnings from global businesses about the impact of tariffs on consumer prices.

Adidas has estimated additional costs of €200m linked to US tariffs, while Nike said earlier this year that such measures could add $1bn to its expenses.

Sony’s announcement highlights the growing pressure on gaming companies to balance affordability for players with rising operating costs driven by trade policies and economic uncertainty.
