Federal Finance Minister Aurangzeb received a detailed briefing from the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) on challenges in promoting competition in the sugar sector and causes of the recent sugar crisis.
The meeting was attended by Finance Advisor Khurram Shehzad, CCP Chairman Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, Registrar Shehzad Hussain, Legal Advisor Hafiz Naeem, Director Cartel and Trade Abuse Salman Zafar, and other senior officials.
Sidhu said the CCP is preparing recommendations for the Sugar Sector Reform Committee. He highlighted causes of previous crises in 2008-09, 2015-16, and 2019-20, and shared findings and enforcement actions against cartelisation.
The minister was told that the CCP's 2021 order against the sugar cartel had been remanded by the Competition Appellate Tribunal for rehearing. A strategy has been prepared for its quick disposal.
Aurangzeb assured full government backing to speed up pending court cases and strengthen CCP's operational capacity. He stressed that a strong competition framework protects consumers, ensures transparency, and supports economic growth.
