A key turning point from We’ll Always Have Summer, the final book in Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy, will come to life in Season 3 of the Prime Video series as Jeremiah Fisher makes a controversial decision during spring break.

While briefly separated from Belly during their college break, Jeremiah, played by Gavin Casalegno, hooks up with another girl. Belly (Lola Tung) only finds out after overhearing a conversation at a frat party. When she confronts Jeremiah, he insists he thought they were broken up. Belly, believing it was just a break, slaps him and ends the relationship immediately.

Fans have long debated whether Jeremiah’s actions count as cheating. Han, who is both the author of the trilogy and the showrunner of the series, offers a nuanced perspective. “Because they technically were broken up,” she told PEOPLE, “it’s really how different people see it.” She emphasized that as the creator, she feels empathy for all her characters, including those who make mistakes. “I have to see their side and walk in their shoes.”

The fallout doesn’t stop with Belly and Jeremiah. The revelation causes tension with those closest to them, including Belly’s brother Steven (Sean Kaufman) and best friend Taylor (Rain Spencer). Their reactions may differ from what fans expect based on earlier seasons.

“They’re through college now, and there’s a whole life that’s kind of been had,” Kaufman told PEOPLE. “It kind of shakes up what people have thought.”

As the emotional impact of Jeremiah’s decision plays out, fans can catch the first two episodes of Season 3 now streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays.
